Although betaine is a rather safe supplement, some side effects may occur when taken in high doses. These could be higher cholesterol levels for persons with kidney diseases or obese, nausea, stomach upset and diarrhea.

There are various case studies that reveal the importance of betaine for the human body. For example, one particular study tried to see the benefits of betaine in reducing homocysteine. The study involved 42 participants. They were obese and throughout a period of 12 weeks they were given either placebo, or betaine.  They were also following a certain hypoenergetic diet. At the end of the research study, specialists noticed that the group who took betaine had a lower concentration of homocysteine in the plasma.

Other studies were conducted to see the health consequences of taking betaine for reducing homocysteine levels. They have shown that if taken in high doses or on dietary intake, it still diminishes the concentration of homocysteine. One specific study revealed that betaine is beneficial for cardiovascular health.

Another test involved 8 men. They were under diets with low choline and betaine meal, high choline and betaine meal, high choline meal, choline supplement, high betaine meal or betaine supplements. All meals and supplements containing betaine were observed to reduce homocysteine in the plasma after up to 6 hours from ingestion. The other supplements and meals raised concentrations of homocysteine in the plasma.
