In 2005, scientists carried out an experiment that wanted to demonstrate that compounds found in peptidase could improve intestinal absorption in short bowel syndrome. This analysis was made in a laboratory and the subjects of the study were humans. They were given teduglutide, a peptidase, for 21 days and the results showed a decreased fecal weight and other improvements in intestinal absorption. In conclusion, teduglutide peptidase was well tolerated and safe, and it visibly increased the intestinal wet weight absorption in patients suffering from short bowel syndrome.

Peptidase may also have the role of helping diagnose patients with joint effusion of unknown origin. Scientists from the department of Orthopedic Surgery, Aichi Kouseiren Showa Hospital from Japan compared the activity of peptidase in synovial fluid in people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Given that the activity was less noticeable in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, it could be possible to put diagnostics based on a comparison.

A placebo, double-blind trial proved that peptidase can also relieve chronic neck pain. The experiment involved 30 people with chronic neck pain that showed moderate reduction in their pain than those who received a placebo. After this study, scientists have taken peptidase in the laboratory and confirmed that peptidase can faster increase the healing time of fractures, sprains, tissue injuries and bruises. Over 400 people participated in a study that tried to demonstrate that peptidase can actually reduce osteoarthritis pain. The results were positive, thus this enzyme does relieve the pain as much as the osteoarthritis drug, diclofenac.

Peptidase’s role in increasing the recovery of injuries was also proved through a study that included 40 people with sports injuries divided into a placebo group and the actual clinical group. Taking protease enzymes reduced the time needed for recovery by up to 50%.

A study published in February 2007 found peptidase to be useful for digestive diseases such as ulcers.

As a protease, peptidase also can bound to the macroglobulins hydrolyze immune complexes, to damaged proteins and proteinaceous debris in the blood stream, helping hydrolyze and remove extra cellular proteins. As the human organism is exposed to stress, unhealthy food and free radicals, proteins change their function and stop doing their role; therefore, they become inactive and often harmful for the body. Peptidase removes them thus “cleaning” the blood stream, but only if taken orally on an empty stomach.

Also, the intake of protease enzyme showed a decrease of heavy metal concentrations such as lead and mercury, destructive for the body. The enzyme leads to their removal from the body, especially from the blood to the liver. Heavy metal concentrations usually appear when there is an unbalanced diet or when the food is not all natural. These cases are quite often and to have the possibility of taking peptidase to balance the levels of minerals and metals in the body is extremely beneficial for people’s health.
